New Digs for Potato Company

Excerpts taken from the Post Register dated April 22, 2011:

Idahoan Foods will move its corporate headquarters and about 65 employees into the old EICAP building in downtown Idaho Falls.

Downtown Idaho Falls is about to house the new corporate headquarters of an expanding potato business.

The 17,000-square foot facility is across from City Hall and undergoing renovation by crews from Idaho Falls-based Pacific West Construction.

Until recently, the building served as the home of Eastern Idaho Community Action Partnership.

Lewis said his company has outgrown its Lewisville facility, which will remain open.

"Idahoan Foods has enjoyed significant growth during the last three-and-a-half years and we knew we would outgrow our current facility," Lewis said.  "Right now, frankly, we're a little cramped."

Company officials said they hope their employees can move into the downtown office by October.

While Idahoan's expansion is not expected to create many jobs, Robb Chiles, president and CEO of the Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce, heralded the news.

Lewis said Idahoan executives chose downtown because of nearby amenities, including restaurants, professional offices and the greenbelt.  He also said his company believes it can help improve the image and viability of downtown.

"We have an opportunity to take a leadership role in the revitalization of the historic downtown area, and we are very happy to be able to do that, "Lewis said.

In total Idahoan employs about 700 employees and operates plants or offices in Lewisville, Dubois, Grand Forks, N.D.; and Winnemucca, Nevada.  About 260 employees will continue to work out of the Lewis ille plant after the mo e is complete.

Idahoan makes and sells potato products marketed under the Idahoan, Honest Earth and Idaho Supreme brands.

People Pleasers - Growing companies find Idaho fertile ground for High-touch industries.

by Ron Starner, ron.starner@conway.com

"We are a people business," says Alicia Laszewski, a spokesperson for C3, a Florida-based company that's investing in a whole bunch of people in Twin Falls, Idaho.

A rapidly growing firm that provides call center services for businesses such as health insurance companies, C3 cut the ribbon on its new 48,000-sq.-ft. (4,459-sq.-m.) customer contact center in Idaho in October and has already hired 900 workers.

"The main reason we chose to locate a call center in Twin Falls is the quality of the area work force," says Laszewski.  "They have been phenomenal. Being based here provides C3 with access to high-quality people, and that is essential because we are in the people business."

With an investment of US $43 Million into the local ecoonomy in the first year of operation in Idaho, C3 is delivering a shot in the arm to the entire Twin Falls area.

"This facility was previously occupied by Dell, and that made it very easy for us to move in and begin operations quickly," Laszewski.  "We began hiring in July, and we had over 2,000 applications for our first 550 job openings."

All call center workers at C3 are required to be trained and licensed insurance agents so that they can sell insurance to callers.

The company is part of a growing wave of firms investing into high-tech facilities and high-touch operations in Idaho.

Over the past year, Idaho has reaped large facility investments from C3, Esterline in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Power in Lake Fork, International Isotopes in Idaho Falls, and Formation Metals in Salmon.

Twin Falls and Idaho Falls have both seen their fair share of capital projects and job creation, as have Pocatello and Parma.  The Idaho National laboratory continues to attract expanding companies to Idaho Falls, as innovative entrepreneurs seek a safe haven for their investments and the knowledge capital needed to conduct high-tech R&D.

"The Center for Advanced Energy Studies built a wonderful building and is experimenting with a  computer-assisted virtual environment," says Linda Martin, CEO of Grow idaho Falls.  "With the new technology of CAVE, they can simulate being in an electric utility or a nuclear power plant.  They can build a virtual transmission line.  They use mapping technologies, and they are attracting an international prescence.  The center is able to attract the people who are the best in the world at what they do."

That includes the high-stakes nuclear project of AREVA.  "We have been through several hearings with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and they issued the security assessment report in October," Martin says.  "They will probably issue the final environmental impact statement in either January or February of this year.  Hopefully, AREVA will be able to start up and get all of their needed licensing and permitting by January of 2012.  It has been a long process, but we have all worked together and the community has been very supportive."

The community has also supported the planned construction of what could become Idaho's largest wind farm.  Ridgeline Energy is building windmills in the foothills surrounding idaho Falls.  The first phase of the project is expected to cost about $200 Million.  Upon completion, the wind farm could supply power to many of the homes of the 55,000 residents of Idaho Falls.

"It will be a low-impact project for services, and it will help the county's tax base and bottom line," notes martin.

Other notable Idaho projects in recent months include Allstate's $21.9-million customer service center in Pocatello, Nunhems' $30-million plant expansion in Parma, and ON Semiconductor announcing its second expansion in one year in Pocatello.

Allstate Insurance Company is bringing more than 500 new jobs to the Pocatello-Chubbuck area as part of its project.  "The Pocatello-Chubbuck area is a terrific community that offers an enthusiastic and energetic population from which Allstate can select the best and brightest to deliver on our commitment to a superior customer experience," said Mark Pitchford, vice president of Allstate.

The 75,000-sq.-ft. (6,968-sq.-m.) complex, now under construction, is slated to open by September 2011.

Nunhems is investing $30 million into its crop-science operations in Parma.  "The climate and work force here made it so inviting," said CEO Douwe Zijp.  "It is very well possible we will expand further.  Our business is flourishing."

Idaho State University selected by Carnegie Foundation as "Research University-High Status"

ISU press release:
Idaho State Journal
305 S. Arthur Ave.
Pocatello, Idaho
83204
239-4161

The Carnegie Foundation announced today its rankings of U.S. colleges and universities and Idaho State University has catapulted to Research University-High status. ISU is only one of 98 institutions in the country in this prestigious group.

This classification is second only to the highest category Research University-Very High, with 108 universities holding this elite designation. Combined, these two research categories represent less than 5 percent of the nation's 4,663 institutions of higher education.

Every six or seven years, the Foundation assesses all institutions of higher education in the United States and publishes its influential Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. For many years, ISU has been listed as a DRU, or Doctoral Research University. This classification is one level above Master's L (Master's Colleges and Universities), such as Boise State University, and one level below RU-H (Research University-High), such as the University of Idaho.

"The gold standard of university ratings is the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching," said ISU President Arthur C. Vailas. "The designation of Research University-High is a great distinction for ISU and a real testament to our excellent faculty and staff.

"I am very proud of our faculty," Vailas continued, "as they have dedicated themselves to research and teaching and the results of that effort have been recognized by the prestigious Carnegie Foundation designation."

This new distinction has many material consequences for ISU. According to ISU Provost Gary A. Olson, "ISU will enjoy more prestige nationally in the eyes of those in higher education and the state, too, will benefit by being able to boast that it now supports two RU-H institutions."
Because Carnegie is the standard of university performance and a measure of its competitiveness, attaining this distinction is a sign of ISU's growing institutional maturity. The university's new status puts Idaho State University in some very good company.  Only about 100 hundred institutions have this designation, including Auburn, Baylor, Boston College, Clemson, Fordham and Kent State universities.

In the West, ISU is in the company of New Mexico State, Utah State, and Northern Arizona universities.

The higher Carnegie designation will also have significant positive ramifications in the area of research as it will make the university more attractive as a partner to industry, and it increases ISU's ability to negotiate a higher indirect cost rate for grants from the federal government.

"Research University-High status will improve our ability to attract increased externally funded research," Pamela Crowell, vice president for research, said.  "Funding agencies generally tend to have more confidence in grant proposals submitted by faculty from higher ranked institutions."

Provost Olson added "Our new status not only improves our ability to recruit high-quality faculty, postdocs and graduate students, but it strengthens our justification for increased salary for faculty and staff when funding becomes available. And it also enhances our graduates' attractiveness to prospective employers and prestigious graduate and professional schools."

Chukars organization wins Bob Freitas Award

Baseball America bestowed a high honor on the Idaho Falls Chukars on Thursday. The nation's premier minor league baseball publication named the Chukars as the winner of the Bob Freitas Award, given to the top organization at each classification level of minor league baseball.

Idaho Falls won the award given to short-season organizations, which includes 40 teams in the Pioneer League, the Northwest League, the Appalachian League and the New York-Penn League. This is the first time Idaho Falls has won the award, which Baseball America started in 1989.

The award is not based upon on-field success but is given to organizations that are "on a path of long-term excellence and true parts of their communities."

"It's something that we obviously couldn't have won without the unwavering support from our fans," Chukars general manager Kevin Greene said. "It's pretty incredible for people to come out in years where we do poorly, as well as years we do well. Our attendance was only down 3 percent this year from the previous year when we had the second best record in the league."

Lee Folger, the president and publisher of Baseball America, will present the award to Greene on Monday at the winter meetings

Idaho Exports Jump in 2010

Idaho Exports Jump in 2010

________________________________

Idaho exports experienced significant positive growth of more than 54% in the second quarter of 2010 compared with the same period one year ago. Exports have rebounded $2.56 billion, just $17.3 million short of a record second quarter in 2008.

The increase in exports can be attributed to stronger demand for semiconductors and semiconductor equipment as well as strong prices for precious and industrial minerals and significant increases in sales of transportation equipment including small aircraft and locomotives.

Through the second quarter of 2010, top Idaho export markets include: Canada, Singapore, Taiwan and China. The state of Idaho maintains trade and investment promotion offices in China, Mexico and Taiwan and works actively with Idaho companies to help them expand their customer base in international markets.
